General

What are credits?
Credits are a measure of capacity that are consumed by media management, delivery, and transformation.
How does the credits system work?
At the start of each billing period, your bundle includes a set number of credits to use across media management, delivery, and transformations. If you're on a monthly bundle, your credits refresh each month. If you're on an annual bundle, they refresh once per year.
Why are you moving to a credits-based pricing model? What are the benefits for me?
We are moving to a credits-based system so that we can offer all of our functionality to all of our customers. Our previous model, which was based on origin images, did not allow us to offer advanced capabilities like video and AI transformations to every customer. The benefit to you is that you can now use all of these capabilities as you need.
When does this credit system go into effect?
This will go into effect on July 1, 2025. All customers will transition to this model at their next renewal or sooner if requested.
Are there any changes to the features or functionality I currently have?
Yes - you now have access to everything that Imgix has to offer! Previously, some advanced features like video and AI transformations were only available on select plans. With the new credit-based system, all capabilities are included in every bundle. You can now use the full Imgix platform as needed, with credits applied based on usage. This means more flexibility, fewer limitations, and no need to upgrade just to try something new.
Can I still use Imgix if I don't use advanced features like AI or video?
Yes. You can continue using Imgix as you do today for standard image delivery and transformation. The credits model simply makes additional features available if and when you want to use them.
What happens to my current subscription when the new model launches?
If you're on a monthly subscription, your transition will begin in August 2025, and we will notify you ahead of time with your specific transition date. If you're on an annual billing cycle, your update will take place at your next annual renewal.
Will I be automatically switched over, or do I need to do something?
There is nothing you need to do, unless you wish to move to the new model prior to your next renewal – in which case, please reach out to our support team or your customer success manager.
Is this a price increase or decrease for me?
For most customers, pricing will remain the same. If you're on an older agreement, you may see a small adjustment—either an increase or decrease—to align with the new credit-based bundles. The new model was designed to reflect how you already use Imgix, so any changes to your cost should be minimal.

Purchasing Credits and Costs

How much do credits cost?
Credits are sold at varying prices, depending on the volume of credits being purchased. Credit prices start at $0.40 per credit, and go down from there.
What are the available credit packages or plans?
  • Starter - $25 for 65 credits
  • Basic - $75 for 250 credits
  • Mid-range - $150 for 830 credits
  • Growth - $300 for 1875 credits
  • Growth Plus - $500 for 3570 credits
  • Enterprise - Varying prices for higher credit volumes
Can I buy credits on-demand, or do I need a subscription?
You require a subscription – either a self-serve package that you can purchase on our website, or an enterprise contract.
Can I purchase credits a la carte?
No, but we plan to offer this capability in the future.
Is there a minimum number of credits I have to purchase?
The smallest credit bundle is the starter pack with 65 credits.
Do you offer volume discounts or custom enterprise pricing?
Yes – we offer custom pricing for high-volume usage and enterprise needs. Contact us to discuss a bundle that works for your business.
Do you have any options to trial Imgix or test certain features first before committing to a subscription?
Yes – click here for a self-service trial, or click here to contact sales for an enterprise trial. Self-service trials will get 100 credits to use within 30 days.
How do I purchase more credits?
Currently, credits can only be purchased in self-service packages or via contract. If you run out of credits in your current package, you may upgrade your plan at any time within your Imgix dashboard or by contacting us.
Can I set up auto-recharge for credits?
Yes. If you're on a monthly subscription with a credit card on file, your credits will automatically renew each month based on your selected bundle.
Can I get a refund for unused credits?
No. Credits represent access to the Imgix platform, and unused credits do not carry over or qualify for refunds. We recommend choosing the bundle that best matches your needs to make the most of your usage each billing period.
Can I cancel my subscription?
Yes. If you are on a monthly self-service subscription, you can cancel at any time from the Imgix dashboard. If you are on a contract agreement, please reach out to your customer success manager. While cancellations are not eligible for refunds, you'll retain access to your credits and Imgix features through the end of your billing period.

Transitioning from Legacy Plans

What happens to my current subscription or usage-based plan?
All current plans are being transitioned to a new credit-based plan. If you're on a monthly subscription, your transition will begin in August 2025, and we will notify you ahead of time with your specific transition date. If you're on an annual billing cycle, your update will take place at your next annual renewal.
Will my usage be converted into credits automatically?
Yes - you will not have to calculate anything. Your credit balance and usage will be shown in your dashboard.
Can I stay on my current plan if I prefer it?
No. All subscriptions will transition to the new credit-based model. This ensures every customer has access to the full Imgix platform and the latest features, with more flexibility and control over how you use your account.
How will pricing compare to my legacy plan?
For most customers, pricing will remain the same. If you're on an older agreement, you may see a small adjustment—either an increase or decrease—to align with the new credit-based bundles. The new model was designed to reflect how you already use Imgix, so any changes to your cost should be minimal.
Will there be a grace period or overlap for switching plans?
Yes. Monthly subscriptions will transition throughout August, and contract subscriptions will switch at your next renewal. We'll notify you in advance of your specific transition date, so there's no disruption to your service.

Credit Usage & Value

How do credits get used across features?

Each Imgix feature uses a specific amount of credits based on the type of action or transformation. Here's a breakdown of how credits are consumed:

* A standard render may include multiple transformations as a single operation. For example, one standard render may include contrast, sharpen, crop and compress as part of a single operation that would be charged at 1/500th credit.

Note: There are no partial credit charges. So, 1 credit allows up to 500 standard renders or up to 50 advanced renders. For example, 120 advanced renders = 3 credits

Where can I track my credit usage?
If you are on a credit subscription, you can view your current credit usage and balance directly in your dashboard. We also plan to provide customers on contract-based subscriptions monthly usage statements in the future. If you have not yet transitioned to a credit subscription, you will not see credit usage data in your dashboard.
Are credits consumed in real time?
Yes. Credits are deducted as actions are performed.
Do different actions consume different amounts of credits?
Yes. Different transformations and actions use varying amounts of credits. Please see the chart above for the full breakdown.
Can I set usage alerts or limits to avoid unexpected costs?
You'll automatically receive email alerts when your credit usage reaches 80%, 90%, and 100%. These notifications help you stay ahead of your usage and avoid surprises.
What happens if I run out of credits?
Running out of credits should never be a surprise. When you reach 80% and 90% of your credit balance, we will email you to make sure that you're aware that you might be getting close. For self-serve subscriptions, you can upgrade your plan anytime at a prorated rate to access more credits. If you expect your usage to return to normal the following month, you can downgrade again before the next billing cycle. For contract subscriptions, contact your customer success manager to request additional credits.
How can I estimate how many credits I'll need each month?
We have a credit calculator on our pricing page that you can use to estimate credits. Alternatively, you can make use of our free trial to see how many credits you use, or you can reach out to us at any time and we will help you calculate.
What assumptions are made in the credit calculator?
For the purposes of delivering an estimate, we have used data from across all our customers to determine median volumes of image transformations.
How can I optimize my usage to get the most out of my credits?
There are a few best practices that can help you maximize performance while minimizing credit usage. Please see our Best Practices Guide for more information on how you can get the most out of Imgix.
  1. Use auto=compress,format
This is one of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce file size and save on bandwidth-related credits without sacrificing quality.
  2. Set a longer cache TTL
If your images don't change frequently, consider setting a longer TTL (Time to Live), such as 1 year. This reduces the number of read requests and transformation operations, which helps lower your credit consumption.
  3. Be strategic with srcset
srcset is great for responsive images, but our SDKs generate 24 versions by default. Reducing this to around 12 can offer a good balance between responsive performance and credit efficiency, especially when combined with caching.
  4. Resize before upload
Avoid uploading unnecessarily large files. Setting a max input file size can help with both read performance and credit savings.
What's the monetary value of one credit?
Credit prices vary based on your bundle size. Smaller bundles start at $0.40 per credit, and the price decreases with larger bundles.

Expiration & Rollover

Do credits expire?
Yes. Trial credits expire 30 days after your trial begins or once you use up your 100 trial credits—whichever comes first. For self-serve paid subscriptions, credits expire monthly. For contract subscriptions, credits expire at the end of each 12-month license.
Can I roll over unused credits to the next billing cycle?
No. Credits represent access to the Imgix platform, and unused credits do not carry over to the next billing period or qualify for refunds. We recommend choosing the bundle that best matches your needs to make the most of your usage each billing period.
What happens to my unused credits if I upgrade/downgrade my plan?
If you upgrade your subscription, your credit limit increases immediately. If you downgrade, the change takes effect at the start of the next billing cycle, and you can use your remaining credits until the end of the current cycle.
Can I transfer credits between accounts or users?
No. Credits are tied to your account and cannot be transferred to other users or accounts.

Billing & Invoicing

How will billing work?
Billing occurs on the first of each month. If you sign up at any other point during the month, your first billing cycle will be prorated based on your start date.
Will I receive an invoice for credit purchases?
Yes. Invoices will be generated and sent for all credit purchases.
Can I set up auto-renewal for credits?
Yes. If you're on a monthly subscription with a credit card on file, your credits will automatically renew each month based on your selected bundle.
Do you support multiple payment methods?
We currently support credit card payments for monthly subscriptions. For annual or enterprise subscriptions, additional payment options may be available. Please contact us for details.
What happens if a payment fails or is late?
If a payment fails, you'll be notified immediately. We'll make several retry attempts before pausing access to the platform. You can update your payment method anytime from your dashboard.
Will my billing cycle remain the same?
Billing occurs on the first of each month. If you sign up at any other point during the month, your first billing cycle will be prorated based on your start date.
How will my invoices change under the new credit model?
Invoices will now include a line item for your credit bundle, with the quantity representing the number of credits purchased. Your total will reflect the cost of that bundle for the billing period.
Can I see a detailed breakdown of credit usage on my invoice?
Credit usage details are not included on the invoice, but you can view your usage and balance in the Imgix dashboard's analytics section.
Can I pay in a different currency other than USD?
At this time, we are only accepting USD.

Technical / Product Integration

Will any API calls or SDKs change with the new pricing model?
No. There are no changes to our API endpoints or SDKs as part of this pricing update. Your existing integrations will continue to work as they are.
How can I track my credit balance?
If you are on a credit subscription, you can track your credit balance directly in your Imgix dashboard. If you have not yet transitioned to a credit subscription, you will not see credit usage data in your dashboard.
Is credit consumption visible per request or image transformation?
Not at the moment. You'll be able to see your usage broken down by credit type, including management, delivery, and transformations, along with the complexity level of transformations.
Can I receive alerts or webhook notifications for low credit balance?
You will receive email alerts when you reach 80%, 90%, and 100% of your credit balance to help you stay on top of your usage. In-app notifications are planned for the future, but webhook alerts are not currently on the roadmap. If webhook notifications are important for your workflow, we'd love to hear your feedback. Feel free to reach out and let us know what would be most helpful.
Are there sandbox or developer tools for testing credit consumption?
While there isn't a sandbox environment or developer simulation available yet, we're always exploring ways to support testing and development more effectively.
Will any features be restricted or become more expensive under this model?
No features are being restricted. The credit model is designed to reflect how features are used. Please see this table above for a full breakdown of credit costs per feature.
Are there certain premium features that can only be accessed with credits?
All features are now included with every bundle. Credits are the only requirement to use them. There are no separate licenses or paywalls for advanced tools like AI transformation and video optimization.
Will performance be impacted if I'm on a lower credit subscription?
No. Imgix delivers the same performance, speed, and quality regardless of your subscription. Larger subscriptions include more credits but do not change the underlying platform capabilities.
